| 12ft Coral Sea Tiger!!!Starting the afternoon dive we walked to the swim step and saw this monster nosing around some fish carcasses hanging there as chum for the pole fishing guys. I was surprised to see Rob Torelli and Mark his camera man jump in and film the shark up close. Rob had to bump it twice on the nose with his camera housing. After a while the Tiger went to the bottom, (more less) where filming continued. I'm sure you've seen footage of this shark in many videos by now. I've heard as long as a tiger is not on the surface they are somewhat safe. I jumped in along with about six others with cameras and we all took various shots. As normal in the Coral Sea there were many other sharks around and one of the guys shot one with a powerhead. It was about 200lbs and the size of a man. The big tiger (I'd say about 2,000lbs) took an interest in the bleeding unconcsious shark and in one gulp pretty much swallowed it from tail to mid chest. Either the shark came to, or the current from the Tiger swimming away with it, caused the pectoral fins on the "victim" to wave and the head to jerk back and forth. It was very easy to imagine a diver in the jaws with his neck, shoulders, and arms waving as the big fish swam away!! The experience made for several days of often looking behind me... Nice photo but I dont think I'd do it again!! |
